That’s My Story & I’m Sticking To It!
September 21, 2009
We all have a story. Everyone has a story. Actually, most people have many stories. I have maybe 500 or more stories myself.
Unfortunately, so often our stories prevent us from realizing our potential.
When you experience some event you tend to categorize it as a good experience or a bad experience. The person next to you may have categorized the same event totally different from you. – Same event, different experience.
How is that possible?
When we experience an event via our senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) we form an internal representation of that experience. But, our internal representation of that experience has already gone through a process of filters. Many of these filters are unconscious – out of our awareness. Though the types of filters we all use are basically the same, the content of the filters may differ.
For example: memory/past experience is one of the filters. I had a client who had a past experience of being booed at a grade school event when this client read a poem. Consequently this client would not speak at any events & shied away from anything that would require getting up in front of an audience. Now this person had an amazing singing voice, but would only sing to herself. Another client always had wonderful responses when getting up in front of a group. Loved to sing, but did not have as strong and beautiful a voice as the first client. The second client had a career as a performer & singer; while the first was very unhappy working as an accountant.
In the above example the first client would categorize getting up in front of people as a very bad experience, yet she had the talent and vocals to potentially be a huge singing star. The second client loved getting up in front of people and enjoyed a career doing this. Her experience surrounding getting up in front of people was categorized as good.
You can’t change your story; however, there are many methods out there that can help change the content of some of your filters to allow you to realize your potential.
You don’t have to let your story hold you back from living the life you want.
How great is that?
